Rangefinder Compact

The story

The Olympus XA comes out of a brief window where miniaturisation outpaced automation and engineers were still proud of dials. Catalogued as a rangefinder compact, it pairs the F.Zuiko 35mm f/2.8 with a 35mm film path. A bit of background: designed by the legendary Maitani Yoshihisa, also father of the OM-1.

The F.Zuiko 35mm f/2.8 is the everyday-light specialist — not a low-light hero, but contrasty, sharp and honest at every aperture. Film supply is a non-issue: any 35mm cassette from any lab works. Power comes from button cells (LR44 / SR44) — keep a spare in the bag, they're easy to forget until the shutter locks up. The matching clip-on flash dedicates with the body and disappears off the front when you don't need it. Minimum focus is 0.85 m, close enough for a coffee cup or a face but stops short of true macro. One thing worth knowing before you load a roll: the smallest true rangefinder ever produced — fits in a coin pocket. The 35mm field of view sits halfway between observer and participant; it suits anything where you want the viewer to feel in the scene.

The Olympus XA has its fans for a reason, but it's no longer a secret — set a strict budget, hold out for a clean copy, and don't overpay for a famous name. Worth remembering: cult favorite of street photographers from Tokyo to New York.
